Confidence, vitality, delight in life
Students at the Shambhala School develop authenticity: a well-rounded outlook on the world, and their place in it as well as tools for engagement. They join strong academic training with the rich experience of artistic and musical expression, learning through doing, and experiencing the natural world outside the walls of the school.
Middle and High School students experience the challenge of a high quality academic curriculum within an intimate and safe environment. Students and teachers develop a close working relationship in which exploration and discovery is a common journey. The Shambhala School actively recruits international students to our classes, ensuring that our students experience different cultures and develop a global awareness.
The Shambhala School maintains a high academic standard that meets and exceeds Nova Scotia Department of Education requirements.
GRADES 6 – 8 Middle School
As a transition from elementary there is a continuity with a rich cultural exploration from the elementary years but students are ready for greater detail, focus, and thoughtfulness. Students are actively encouraged to think critically and share their own opinions on topics covered in class, and become increasingly independent.
Students start and end the day with a homeroom teacher, with art and music taught by specialists who themselves are professional artists and musicians. Their outdoor education program begins with skills building in kayaking and canoeing, matchless fire building, compass skills and orienteering, shelter building, and outdoor environmental biology.
An integrated English/History program is at the heart of the curriculum. It explores early civilizations up to modern times developing a large world view while honing oral expression, reading, writing and critical thinking skills.
Grades 9 – 12 High School
High School continues the student’s education in the Middle Years in an intimate and supportive environment. The emphasis at this level is on academic preparation for university combined with a further refinement of artistic ability in developing a powerful expression and sense of being a creator in one’s life.
The outdoor education curriculum is a continuous development in skills and deeper experiences, culminating at the Grade 12 level with a three-day canoe trip in September and other year-end challenges such as three-day hike on the beautiful Cape Chignecto trail on the Bay of Fundy.
Graduates of the Shambhala School excel at universities throughout Canada, the United States and Australia. Our Grade 12 graduates regularly receive scholarships to universities throughout Canada.
